This morning we buried our beloved cat Whiskers who passed away during the night.  She had a long life and we knew her time was coming. She had some kidney issues earlier this year which is pretty common in older cats and since then had been slowly losing weight. It had been especially difficult to watch her deteriorate over the past couple of weeks, but she didn’t seem to be in pain so we just tried to make her as comfortable as possible.

Whiskers has been with us since the beginning. Joel and I adopted her shortly after we moved in together in late 1995. We fell in love with the 6 month old Whiskers the moment we saw her at the shelter; she was friendly and had the most beautiful, soft coat. I’ve always felt like she could have been a show cat.

Whiskers was a pretty independent cat; we wouldn’t call her a lap cat – although Joel has fond memories of her lying on his lap and resting her head on his computer keyboard while he worked in his office. She absolutely loved to spend time in the garage, which really was her domain and it’s also where she went to pass. Joel made her a little bed and we just prayed she would go peacefully – and we believe she did. She would have turned 14 years old next month.

We decided to bury her in garden and Joel spent the morning building a wooden box for her which Jake and I decorated with stickers and photos from our time with Whiskers. Nonetheless, Joel had the closest bond with Whiskers (she always preferred him for whatever reason since she was little), so building and placing her in the box he build must have been incredibly difficult for him this morning.

As a final touch, we planted a small tree at the site in her memory and we will miss and love her always!

Oh, I'm so sorry. Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and whe
